21 White Papers (2026-2036): Building the Next Decade of Marine Science

The 21 White Papers (Now Available)

The 21 White Papers are now available. These form the foundation for the new National Marine Science Strategy (2026–2036).

In August 2024, NMSC leaders identified a set of key Focal Areas to guide the new Strategy. These areas build on national and international priorities, including the Sustainable Oceans Plan, the UN Ocean Decade, and the review of the 2015 National Marine Science Plan.

This milestone is the result of a remarkable community effort. More than 500 scientists, stakeholders, and ocean stewards generously contributed their time, expertise, and perspectives to shape the priorities for Australia’s oceans in the coming decade. Their collective knowledge and commitment have been invaluable in ensuring the Strategy reflects the needs, challenges, and opportunities of our marine nation.

The White Papers are organised under two themes — Challenges & Opportunities and Enablers — reflecting both the pressing issues facing Australia’s marine environment and the essential supports needed to address them.

Looking ahead, the White Papers will be published as a Special Issue in early 2026, providing an enduring reference for the marine science community and beyond.
