WESTPAC – Call for New Proposal Development

The IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) is committed to
advancing ocean science and cooperation, catalyzing and developing transformative ocean
science solutions in order to serve the needs of our Member States for the conservation and
sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

This document serves as a call for new initiatives/proposals, to mobilize Member
States and institutions in the region to make international collective efforts in addressing
ocean-related compelling issues, and responding to national and international environmental,
social and economic challenges in the region.

New proposals shall focus on developing and delivering scientific knowledge and
capacities for sustainable development, and fall within the following Areas of Action. Interested
experts and institutions are encouraged to consider aligning initiative(s) with the Challenges
of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

  • Ocean-based solutions to climate change (Mitigation, adaptation and resilience);
  • Marine biodiversity conservation, ocean ecosystem and human health, and blue
    economy;
  • Marine disaster risk reduction and mitigation;
  • Ocean literacy and capacity development;
  • Enhanced knowledge for emerging ocean issues

Please note the Sub-Commission is not a funding agency, but functions as a key
international catalyst, advocate, coordinator and facilitator for ocean science development
and cooperation in the region.

Preliminary proposals are expected to be submitted to the WESTPAC Office
(iocwestpac@unesco.org), with a subject line of “Proposal submission”, preferably no later
than 31 October 2024. The submission deadline could be extended slightly, based on prior
notification.

The preliminary proposals will need to be further revised and finalized, upon the
considerations by a review panel of the Sub-Commission.
